Nieuw Amsterdam
Joe suggested that we should try out this place as it was featured on the "Talk of the Town" section on Urbanspoon. It was definitely a challenge getting there, even though it is located in the heart of the city as we were unable to locate the restaurant at first. This however did not detract from our overall experience at Nieuw Amsterdam.
Beef Brisket ($22)
Served with cabbage salad, mash & gravy, pickles, bread and sauce
Most of the things that were served alongside the beef brisket were pretty much of a standard quality. The beef was the highlight of this dish for me, it was well cooked with an extremely soft and chewy texture. I found it a little bit too greasy for my liking, but I can't really complain much because it is a BBQ dish anyways.
Clam Chowder ($20)
Leeks, potatoes, bacon, clam veloute
This was probably my favourite dish of the two, but do not get me wrong - they were both really great dishes. The chowder was extremely creamy and complimented the veggies while wiping away the bland vegetable taste. The clam was infused with this creamy soup base which gave the dish more of a hearty feeling. Joe and I were addicted to the bread that was served with the beef brisket and we kept dipping it into the chowder.
Overall, this place is definitely worth a visit with friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere bolstered by a modern and inviting decor. Not mention the great food as well :)
